[2024 Annual Retreat] ‘Tax Tribunal does not entertain delay that hampers quick dispensation of Justice’ – CS Hajara Oniyangi

372 Friday 19th January 2024

The Coordinating Secretary of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Hajara Bolanle Oniyangi Esq. has said the annual retreat organized for Commissioners of the Tribunal was aimed at reinvigorating the need for collaboration, teamwork, and cross-fertilizing of ideas on the Tax Dispute.

Speaking on Tuesday at the 2-day annual retreat held at Ibom Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Oniyangi noted that the tribunal in its quest to build confidence in the Nigerian Tax Adjudication System does not entertain delay in any form nor dwell on the technicalities that hamper quick dispensation of justice.

The Co-ordinating Secretary reiterated that different studies used to evaluate the impact of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, in rating tax compliance by the citizenry and organisations, found that an efficient tax adjudication system has helped all revenue authorities to hold taxpayers to their responsibilities and reduce the incidence of tax evasion.

On his part, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Umo Eno who was represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Mr. Emem Bob said a properly managed tax regime can be positioned as an investment incentive free from the negative connotations that undermine the role of taxation in an economic system.

The Governor said that his administration by the tenets of the ARISE Agenda, aims to "intentionally and deliberately improve on our ease of doing business in the State, and added that the State was already at an advanced stage of harmonizing the tax system to include all taxable adults in a progressive tax regime.

Governor Eno commended the tribunal for bringing their retreat to Akwa Ibom State and assured of a return with fun memories of a State with modernized infrastructure and friendly people.
