  • Thursday 14th May 2026

Abuja — The Coordinating Secretary of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Mrs. Anita Erinne, FCTI, has said that voluntary tax compliance grows strongest when taxpayers trust the system and have access to fair, impartial dispute resolution.

Speaking at the 28th Annual Tax Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, Mrs. Erinne said the Tribunal plays a pivotal role in strengthening institutional trust through the fair, transparent, and timely resolution of tax disputes.

The conference theme was “Tax Reforms and Global Reliance: Positioning Nigeria’s Tax System for a Sustainable Future.”

Erinne stressed that ethics and citizen engagement are essential to building a sustainable tax culture. She noted that this requires collaboration between government institutions, professional bodies, and the public.

“The Tribunal’s work goes beyond adjudication,” she said. “It is also about reinforcing confidence in Nigeria’s tax administration framework.”

The lead presentation, “Building a Culture of Voluntary Compliance and Institutional Trust: Dispute Resolution, Ethics, and Citizen Engagement,” was delivered by Prof. Abiola Sanni, SAN, FCTI, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. Prof. Abiola analyzed Nigeria’s tax reform trajectory and explained how effective dispute resolution drives compliance.

The session ended with a shared view that Nigeria’s tax system must continue to align with global best practices, with fairness, trust, and voluntary compliance as the foundation for sustainable revenue generation.
