"Tax Appeal Tribunal Procedure Rules have solidified Tribunal’s commitment to ADR"- says Coordinating Secretary Anita Erinne

  • Wednesday 25th June 2025

The Coordinating Secretary of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Mrs. Anita Erinne, has emphasized the significance of the four landmark Tax Bills recently passed by the National Assembly, describing them as a catalyst for national prosperity and a crucial instrument for reinforcing the social contract between the government and the people.

Mrs. Erinne made the statement while speaking on the topic “The New Tax Reforms and the Role of ADR” at the TaxADR Roundtable 2025, an event aimed at building broad institutional awareness and fostering consensus on the future of TaxADR in Nigeria. The Roundtable was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

The event was particularly timely, coming on the heels of several significant developments in Nigeria’s tax reform landscape, including the passage of key tax reform bills, the enactment of the Arbitration and Mediation Act, and the introduction of the National ADR Policy, signed by the Honourable Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

In his address, the Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN ably represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Arbitration, Drafting and Regulation (Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice), Oloyede Taiye called for a more robust discussion on the implementation of ADR that the office of the Attorney General would continue to introduce Policy Guidelines for its effectiveness.

In her remarks, Mrs. Erinne stated that the Nigerian Tax Reforms of 2025 mark a watershed moment in the country's fiscal history and represent a new philosophy rooted in simplicity, fairness, and collaboration.

She further noted that the Tax Appeal Tribunal (Procedure) Rules, 2021, have strengthened the Tribunal’s commitment to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), explicitly empowering it to encourage, promote, and facilitate amicable settlements.

Mrs. Erinne explained that the Tribunal’s pre-hearing conference mechanism encourages settlement, offers flexibility in proceedings, and fosters negotiated resolutions in line with the Tribunal’s ADR-aligned posture. She cited several Appeals filed before the Tribunal that were resolved amicably, without proceeding to full trial.

According to her, the new Tax reforms further amplify the Tribunal’s role as the primary hub for tax ADR in Nigeria, reinforcing its mandate to deliver speedy and fair dispute resolution.

Mrs. Erinne reaffirmed the Tribunal’s unwavering commitment to ADR and expressed readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders in deepening the adoption of ADR mechanisms for resolving tax disputes.

The event was attended by a wide range of stakeholders in the tax space, including Honourable Commissioners of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, representatives of professional tax bodies, legal practitioners, academics, thought leaders, and tax consultants.
